The tongue holds immense power—far beyond what many recognize. As Proverbs 15:4 says:
“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.” – Proverbs 15:4 (KJV)
Having received a wholesome tongue, it is essential to understand how to recharge it—so that it remains a consistent source of life, blessing, and power. Below are ten spiritual disciplines that help engage the power of life through the wholesome tongue:
1. Obedience: Being in Alignment with God
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” – Revelation 22:14 (KJV)
Obedience is foundational. Walking in alignment with God’s Word connects us to the tree of life. Without obedience, the power of the tongue is misdirected.
2. Speaking in Tongues
“For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.” – Isaiah 28:11 (KJV)
Speaking in tongues recharges your spirit and aligns your utterances with God’s mysteries. It is a spiritual discipline that builds and empowers.
3. Meditation
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” – Matthew 12:34 (KJV)
What fills your heart will eventually shape your words. Meditating on the Word of God ensures that your tongue produces life and not corruption.
4. Declarations
“Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?” – Psalm 12:4 (KJV)
Making declarations grounded in God’s Word reaffirms our identity in Christ. The enemy fears a tongue that speaks the truth in faith.
5. Intercession
“Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:” – 1 Samuel 12:23 (KJV)
A wholesome tongue intercedes. Through prayer, especially for others, the power of life is activated and directed into situations in times of need.
6. Blessing
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:” – Numbers 6:22–24 (KJV)
Blessing others with your words imparts grace and favor. A tongue that blesses never runs dry of divine virtue.
7. Worship
“And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.” – Psalm 35:28 (KJV)
Worship aligns your tongue with heaven’s melody. The power of life flows freely through praise and adoration.
8. Soul Winning
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” – Proverbs 11:30 (KJV)
Soul winning is the greatest expression of a wholesome tongue. By proclaiming God’s words to others and testifying, your words, others can be led to eternal life.
9. Edification
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)
Use your tongue to build, not break. Speak life, encouragement, and strength to those around you.
10. Singing Spiritual Songs
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” – Ephesians 5:19 (KJV)
The songs you minister with your tongue can usher in God’s presence, lift the soul and transform atmospheres. Develop the habit of ministering to The Lord in songs.
The wholesome tongue is not passive, it is powerful, intentional, and spiritual. As you practice these ten disciplines, your tongue will become a tool that releases life, healing, and transformation wherever you go.
